Ribbons are often used to show support for various causes. We see them being worn on lapels, on magnets stuck on vehicles and even as charms on bracelets and necklaces. What do the colors mean though?
Pink ribbons are generally used to raise awareness and even financial support for treatment and research of breast cancer. The color pink was chosen because two different women were working with the same idea but differing colors. They got together and chose pink. This is the most widely recognized color for support ribbons.
Red ribbons are used to show support for HIV/AIDS. It is also used to promote awareness for drug abuse. There was an undercover DEA agent named Enrique Camarena who was killed in 1985. In honor of his death, there were camps created called Camarena Camps where the campers made pledges to live their lives drug free. They wore red badges made from satin denoting this pledge.
